Note, we are not speaking here of any other, supposedly ‘more catholic’ body – like the Roman Catholic Church – but the Anglican Church in Wales.

Loyalty to what you see as “the polity of the wider Holy Catholic Church” does not necessarily demand the loyalty of Anglicans – excepting those who feel there should never have been a Reformation. Even Good Pope John XXIII – whose reforming intention at Vatican II have been resiled from in the modern R.C. Church – agreed with the need of ‘Semper Reformanda’.

Incidentally, I do not recognise your R.C. tendencies on this matter to at all match up to the protestant proclivities of the so-called ‘Anglican Mainstream’ clan. Many like myself consider that entity to be more of an “Anglican Slipstream’ – not really relevant.

What you quote is an unfortunate juxtaposition of two comments which has been misapplied by commentators best summed up by these two comments from Anglican Mainstream:

“Lindsay is right; the resignation is reported as fact; everything else is by ‘sources at the cathedral’ or ‘sources in the church’- i.e. gossips at best, those with an axe to grind at worst. They’re anonymous for a reason …”

You make an enormous jump from “with some clergy resenting the appointment of a woman” to “that does not prevent some male clergy resenting their ministry”. If there were any truth in the accusation it could equally be applied to existing women clergy resenting the import of another woman rather than promoting one of their own. The truth is that we just don’t know, hence the speculation.

Resentment is an unfortunate choice of word in this context because it has been used synonymously with opposition. Many women are equally opposed to women clergy in the church out of loyalty to the polity of the wider Holy Catholic Church rather than small segments which have chosen to depart for reasons of their own making.

It could be noted that “there are many women clergy in England”, but that does not prevent some male clergy resenting their ministry. While some males still are opposed to women clergy in the Church, there is still a problem of disunity, and a lack of loyalty to the polity of the Church.
